The Big Read: Alabama Reads The Adventures of Tom Sawyer by Mark Twain
State; Feb 1–Apr 30
Read for the Fun of It! The selected title for Alabama’s first statewide Big Read is “The Adventures of Tom Sawyer” by Mark Twain. 210 Alabama public libraries are participating in our statewide Big Read. Check out the local public library for events during February-April 2010. Get started reading today. The Big Read is an initiative of the National Endowment for the Arts in partnership with the Institute of Museum and Library Services and Arts Midwest.

African-American Leadership Conference
Troy; Feb 5–6
Celebrate Black History Month with various local and national speakers, symposiums for students and adults, entertainment, and more.

14th Annual “Battle of Mobile Bay 5K Race”
Dauphin Island; Feb 6
Starting at 9 a.m., with a 5K race, followed by a fun run. Awards ceremony immediately following the fun run. Blacksmith demonstrations all day.

Mercedes-Benz Marathon Weekend
Birmingham; Feb 12–14
Birmingham’s premier running weekend with athletes of all ages and running abilities participating. Participate in the 5K event on Saturday or run or walk one of the Sunday races, including the Mercedes Marathon, half marathon, or the marathon 5-member relay. The new double loop marathon course is fast and friendly, offering an up-close and personal view of downtown Birmingham. A festive post-race party concludes the event.

Huntsville; Feb 13–14
Forty-five + vendors in 65 booths, Civil War, glassware, jewelry, toys, books, postcards, posters, space related items furniture, china, silver and more.

America’s First Mardi Gras: A Snapshot of Pageantry in Mobile
Mobile; Feb 14–17
Experience the history, pageantry and excitement of Mardi Gras (“Fat Tuesday”) in the porty city of Mobile where it all began. Learn about Mardi Gras customs and take a guided field trip through the new Mardi Gras Museum showcasing gowns, trains and crowns of Mardi Gras Kings and Queens. See the 2008 King, Queen and their royal court arrive during Monday’s beautiful Floral Parade. Then, celebrate Mardi Gras Day from a privileged vantage point in an historic hotel on the parade route (with dining in the ballroom). This full day of festivities features colorful parades morning, afternoon and evening.

Empty Bowls of Cullman County
Cullman; Feb 15
Experience an evening of Southern gospel music, food and fun and help to fill the empty shelves of the community food bank. Enjoy chili served in a keepsake pottery bowl made by local potters. The cost of admission includes dinner, a pottery bowl, and an evening of music by local entertainers. The proceeds will benefit the Cullman Caring For Kids Food Bank.

Storytelling Festival
Hayneville; Feb 19–20
The National Park Service will host a two-day storytelling festival in celebration of Black History Month.
