Geocaching for PR
The city of Molalla, OR has officially wrapped up its Molalla Geocaching Challenge, selecting a grand prize winner at last week’s city council meeting.
The Challenge invited the public to participate in a high-tech treasure hunt, using a GPS to locate various caches hidden in the Molalla area. Those who successfully located 10 of the caches were invited to stop by the Molalla Area Chamber of Commerce to claim a commemorative coin.
Participants were also entered in a drawing for the grand prize, a $100 gift certificate for the Farmstead Restaurant at Arrowhead Golf and Country Club, donated by J.D. Clarizio. Lynn Peterson, chair for the Clackamas County Board of Commissioners, was present at the council meeting to discuss county goals and agreed to draw the contest winner. Joan Krieger of Sherwood won the prize.
City Manager John Atkins said the Challenge proved to be a success, drawing individuals and families from all over Oregon, Washington and beyond. It ran from Nov. 13, 2009 until Jan. 5, when Sheri Kelly of Molalla Area Chamber of Commerce handed out the last of the city’s 250 coins.
Out of the 167 scorecards turned in, Atkins said only 22 came from Molalla residents.
“Most of the folks who participated in the Challenge said they had never heard of or been to Molalla before,” Atkins said in an e-mail. “Many said they would come back to visit the elk farm, the train park, or to explore the Molalla River Recreation Corridor. This was the whole idea!”
