Hamilton lands part-time ride
Davey Hamilton was confirmed Wednesday to a three-race IndyCar Series
ride with the reorganized Luczo Dragon/De Ferran Motorsports team.
Hamilton will begin at the Indianapolis 500 and compete in the June 5 race at Texas Motor Speedway
. The latter is noteworthy because it is the track where he suffered severe foot injuries in a crash in 2001. The third race, also on an oval track, has not been selected.
Hamilton, who brings HP sponsorship to the Indianapolis-based team, also will advise the team’s full-time driver, Raphael Matos. Gil de Ferran recently was named team president.
Team Penske drivers were three of the fastest four in Wednesday’s first day of IndyCar testing at Barber Motorsports Park
in Birmingham, Ala.
Ryan Briscoe led the way at 1 minute, 10.5052 seconds on the 2.38-mile, 17-turn road course, followed by Helio Castroneves, with Will Power fourth. Justin Wilson was third in his first day with Dreyer & Reinbold Racing.
Simona de Silvestra, 21, a Swiss driver who won four Atlantics races last season, got her first laps in an Indy car, although she spun on her first lap. She is driving for HVM Racing.
