NASCAR Puts Carl Edwards On Probation
After taking out some of his pent up aggression on fellow NASCAR Sprint Cup Series driver Brad Keselowski during Sunday’s Kobalt Tools 500, resulting in the No. 12 car taking wing and slamming into the retaining wall and track surface with its roof, NASCAR has put Carl Edwards on probation for three races.
The controversial incident happened after Edwards was put into the wall earlier in the race after contact with Keselowski. The two had tangled previously during last year’s race at Talladega when Edwards went airborne into the catch fence injuring fans.
After Sunday’s altercation, Keselowski made his feelings known by suggesting that such a stunt could kill someone in the grandstands; a direct reference to Edwards’ Talladega incident nearly a year ago. Keselowski called for Edwards’ suspension.
NASCAR, however, was a little less trigger happy with its penalties.
The sanctioning body’s President Mike Helton announced today that Edwards would be placed on probation for the next three races which will cover the Sprint Cup events at Bristol, Martinsville and Phoenix.

“We’re promoting typical NASCAR driving, side-by-side racing with our type of race cars; and that’s what we talked about back in January,” Helton said. “So we were telling the drivers and telling the public that we told the drivers that we were going to back off on that grip we had. But there is a line you can cross. When you cross that line in our opinion, we’re going to get involved with you.”
So, they got involved with Edwards but did not issue a severe penalty that would appear contrary to their statements before the season started.
Helton also stated that they made it very clear to Edwards that his behavior was unacceptable.
There are also plans for a meeting between NASCAR officials, the two drivers and their team owners, Jack Roush and Roger Penske to put the final closure on the issue.
Actions speak louder than words. Edwards actions were heard loud and clear and NASCAR proved that it’s actions will backup it’s pre-season statements.
